Camp Counselors And Youth Leagues
It's a new opportunity for the youth of Santa Ana. Rather than just offering youth recreation leagues, the city is trying something different this summer - week-long sport camps. Instead of running them with city camp counselors, however, the city has help from the outside.
The Skyhawks Sports Academy of Seattle will provide all the instructors for the camps, according to Jose Perez of the Jerome Center. "We're basically just providing the facilities," Perez said. "They've hired their own instructors and train them for these."This is the first time the city has contracted through Skyhawks, and it was Skyhawks which proposed the idea to the city, said Charlie Shaw, recreation supervisor.
"They approached us about six months ago about wanting to put together these mini-camps as they call them," Shaw said. Interest in the camps has been slow, because publicity material from Skyhawks has been slow arriving in Santa Ana. But the city still has gotten some youths signed up.
"Right now, they didn't send us any of the fliers, so all we have is the information that we had in our brochure," Shaw said. "But we have 10-15 kids signed-up for our first camp, known as the Mini-hawks. We're going to wait and see if we get an increase in attendance in our next camps. "
There are four separate camps offered: Mini-hawk:
Designed for ages 4-7, this camp will be held at Memorial Park. Instruction is aimed at younger children, and will expose the youngsters to soccer, baseball and basketball.
Basketball: To be held at the Jerome Center, this camp is open to ages 7-14. All campers will get 30 hours of instruction.
Baseball: Each camper will get 20 hours of instruction on the field at El Salvador Park. This camp is open for children ages 6-12.
All camps are $ 78, with all the campers receiving a camp T-shirt, sports equipment, a personal evaluation and games.
